Utilities undertake water quality monitoring for the following reasons: • To understand the chemical and physical composition of water entering their reservoirs and networks • Regulatory compliance when returning treated water back to the environment • To better focus and target water treatment, thereby reducing costly chemical dosing Typical water quality parameters monitored by Metasphere include: pH, conductivity, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), turbidity, nitrates and phosphates. Metasphere’s Point Colour RTUs integrate with any digital, analogue (4-20mA) or serial (Modbus RS232/485/SDI-12)) sensor. Point Orange has SDI-12 Multidrop functionality permitting the use of multiple SDI-12 sensors, common in water quality applications. An interesting recent example is TASWater who undertook turbidity monitoring following bush fires. Ash from the bush fires finds its way naturally into water courses and causes turbidity issues at downstream treatment plants. Knowing when a ‘slug’ of turbid water is making its way down the watercourse allows preparation at the treatment plants, thus minimising disruption and damage.
Metasphere’s water monitoring systems are based on the Point Colour range of remote Telemetry units (RTUs). These accept inputs from typical sensors used to monitor water quality and which provide any analogue (4-20mA) or serial (Modbus RS232/485/SDI-12) outputs. Data is returned to either:

Should any readings fall outside the range of pre-set parameters, alarm situations are triggered automatically to alert system operators of immanent problems. Long term trends can also be analysed to identify the risk of potential failures.
