Utilities undertake water quality monitoring for the following reasons: • To understand the chemical and physical composition of water entering their reservoirs and networks • Regulatory compliance when returning treated water back to the environment • To better focus and target water treatment, thereby reducing costly chemical dosing Typical water quality parameters monitored by Metasphere include: pH, conductivity, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), turbidity, nitrates and phosphates. Metasphere’s Point Colour RTUs integrate with any digital, analogue (4-20mA) or serial (Modbus RS232/485/SDI-12)) sensor. Point Orange has SDI-12 Multidrop functionality permitting the use of multiple SDI-12 sensors, common in water quality applications. An interesting recent example is TASWater who undertook turbidity monitoring following bush fires. Ash from the bush fires finds its way naturally into water courses and causes turbidity issues at downstream treatment plants. Knowing when a ‘slug’ of turbid water is making its way down the watercourse allows preparation at the treatment plants, thus minimising disruption and damage.

THE PROBLEM

Water quality monitoring is vital both to comply with government regulations and to ensure a supply of high-quality water for consumers and businesses. Some of the critical properties that must be monitored include pH, conductivity, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), turbidity, nitrates and phosphates.

Failure to detect an early failure in the water network risks releasing sub-standard water to the public and businesses with an attendant threat to public health and the environment. Early detection of potential problems provides the opportunity to act quickly before more costly interventions such as chemical dosing become necessary.

THE SOLUTION

The solution is continual monitoring of water quality. Quality is assessed using various sensors including biosensors, optical sensors and sensor arrays. Sensor outputs are connected to a remote telemetry unit and transmitted to a base station. All data is stored for future analysis and events in which parameters drift away from permitted levels trigger alarms calling for action.

HOW DOES THE METASPHERE
SOLUTION WORK?

Metasphere’s water monitoring systems are based on the Point Colour range of remote Telemetry units (RTUs). These accept inputs from typical sensors used to monitor water quality and which provide any analogue (4-20mA) or serial (Modbus RS232/485/SDI-12) outputs. Data is returned to either:

  • Metasphere’s data visualisation service, Palette, where users can view the received information or make use of both the email and SMS alarm functionality.

Or:

  • Client’s FTP or DNP3 servers, where subsequent alarms can be generated by the user or data can be used to perform control functions.

Should any readings fall outside the range of pre-set parameters, alarm situations are triggered automatically to alert system operators of immanent problems. Long term trends can also be analysed to identify the risk of potential failures.
