Mr John Wavimbukie, Manager Technical Services: Water PNG (Papua New Guinea)
Pressure and flow monitoring helps utilities with leakage detection, monitoring the effectiveness of operational changes, achieving a reduction in water consumption through pressure management, consumption billing, water hammer identification, and calibration data for hydraulic models. Metasphere provides Remote Telemetry Units (RTUs / data loggers) which can integrate with any inline or clamp-on ultrasonic flow meter or pressure transducer (pulse counting, digital, analogue (4-20mA) or serial (Modbus RS232/485/SDI-12)) including those of companies such as ABB, Badger, Druck, Endress & Hauser, Impress, Krohne and Siemens Metasphere are assisting the following clients with programmes of flow and pressure monitoring: Anglian Water, ADDC, City West Water, Hunter Water, Irish Water, Queensland Urban Utility, Sydney Water, Water Authority Fiji, Water PNG, Water Corporation and WaterCare with many other clients in Europe and Asia.
Metasphere’s RTUs integrate seamlessly with almost any flow meter and pressure transducer and can be easily and quickly deployed at low cost. The Point Colour RTUs power up the sensor and take regular readings, typically every 15 minutes.
Data is transferred back to client control systems (ClearSCADA, Mosaic, OSI Soft) or Palette – Metasphere’s own web-hosted telemetry platform on a pre-set regular basis, typically once a day.
The Point Colour RTUs ‘Report by Exception’ (they dial into the control system and transfer data and trigger alarms) immediately if a sensor measurement is outside a use-configured threshold.
A low flow or pressure alarm, for example, may indicate a leak or burst on the network. Consistently high flow or pressure alarms may indicate that the network infrastructure, in particular the pipes, are under too much stress and may burst, or that power savings could be made by reducing the network pressure.
